Why Do We Celebrate World Environment Day?

It is pointed out that this economic sector is one of those with the greatest long-term potential, and Chile has enviable competitive advantages, such as leading global copper production (28%). Increasing awareness, promoting global action, fostering international cooperation, and addressing the environmental challenges facing society are the most common responses to this question. It is also an opportunity to emphasize the importance of protecting the planet and taking concrete measures to preserve nature and ensure a sustainable future for future generations. And possessing the largest reserves of this metal on the planet (23%).y poseer las mayores reservas de este metal en todo el planeta (23%).

"If you add to these advantages the growing demand from humanity, which urgently needs this noble metal, as well as lithium, to combat climate change by 2050, you realize that, in the supply and demand game, mining is by far the most promising sector for the country. World Environment Day is celebrated on June 5th every year to raise awareness and promote global action in favor of the environment. It was established by the United Nations General Assembly in 1972 during the Stockholm Conference on the Human Environment, and has been celebrated worldwide since then.

A strategy based on this sector requires a long-term perspective, one that calls upon all stakeholders because it will necessitate a reordering of national priorities. This will make it essential for everyone to understand what it involves, where the emphasis will be, and how each person will be directly or indirectly benefited as a resident of this area.

The celebration of this day serves several important purposes:

Awareness: World Environment Day aims to increase awareness of environmental issues and the threats facing the planet. Through educational campaigns, events, and activities, it seeks to inform people about the importance of protecting the environment and the negative impacts of pollution, deforestation, climate change, and other environmental problems.

Global action: The celebration of this day also aims to promote global action. Governments, non-governmental organizations, businesses, and individuals are encouraged to take concrete steps to protect and preserve the environment. This can include activities such as tree planting, cleaning up natural areas, promoting renewable energy, and reducing the consumption of natural resources.

International cooperation: World Environment Day also seeks to foster international cooperation in environmental protection. Countries are encouraged to work together to address shared environmental challenges, exchange knowledge and best practices, and collaborate on the implementation of sustainable solutions.

I hold the hope that the discussion has a sufficient foundation, and that our country can soon have a Development Strategybased on sustainable mining, built by all stakeholders, which conveys clearly and concretely to all Chileans what kind of developed Chile we will build (vision), how it will be realized (mission), and what the country needs from each of us to achieve that goal, in other words, a shared purpose. Only in this way, I dare to say, will we make progress towards gaining the long-awaited trust of society in the mining activity and, as the next step, achieving development.
